Black Copper Oxide is commonly used as a blue coloring agent or in crackling star formulas. Also used in thermite compositions.

Although they are not 1:1 interchangeable with copper oxide, other blue coloring agents are copper(II) carbonate, copper(II) oxychloride, and copper benzoate.
